Iowa State Thrilled To Be Home After Ice Storm

Jan 24, 2011 5:00 PM

Iowa State is thrilled to be home after a lengthy road trip.

Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg consulted with the university before deciding to have his team stay on the road longer than planned last week.

“We had our academic advisor on the trip with us, and that made the decision to stay out on the road for so long a lot easier,” Hoiberg said.

“It wasn’t the ideal situation, but at least none of the guys suffered from an academic standpoint.”

Iowa State lost at Oklahoma State and Missouri and were stuck in an Oklahoma ice storm.

“I hit my own pillow for the first time since I can remember around 4 Sunday morning, maybe 5 in the morning,” point guard Diante Garrett said. “You cannot believe how well I slept.”

Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg will return home when his team plays at Nebraska on Saturday.

Hoiberg will be coaching his first Big 12 game.

He was born in Lincoln, his parents attended Nebraska and his grandfather, Jerry Bush, is a Nebraska basketball Hall of Famer.

“To say it’s going to be an emotional game for me is an understatement,” said Hoiberg. “To coach against the same team my grandfather coached — it’s going to be a special moment.”
